You Are Not Alone — Building a Village for Autism Families

Introduction, I speak for myself when I say—there have been many times in my journey where I truly felt like I didn’t have a village.

And in those moments… it felt lonely.

Not just quiet lonely—but the kind of loneliness where you feel like you’re carrying everything on your own, trying to figure things out day by day, moment by moment, without the support you really need.

The Reality Behind the Silence. There were times I stopped going places.

Not because I wanted to—but because of my child’s needs and the unpredictability that can come with it. Public spaces became overwhelming, and instead of feeling supported, I often felt unsure… even uncomfortable.

And honestly, people weren’t always judgmental—but they weren’t always supportive either.

Sometimes they would just watch. Sometimes they would ask questions. And sometimes, I just didn’t feel like explaining.

So I stayed in.

What I Learned About Support Over time, I realized something important—support doesn’t always come automatically. Sometimes, you have to find it. Sometimes, you have to build it.

For me, that started with connecting to:

  • Schools

  • Therapy services

  • People who truly understood my child’s needs

Those spaces helped me begin to feel seen. They helped others understand. And they reminded me that there are people out there who care—you just have to find your community.

Why Community Matters: Because the truth is… not everyone will understand your journey.

But your village will.

A real village is not just about being present—it’s about being supportive in every way.

A real village should support you:

  • Physically, because caregiving is demanding, and you need help

  • Emotionally, because the weight of it all can be overwhelming

You deserve both.

What We’re Building at The Suggs Foundation: My experiences are exactly why The Suggs Foundation exists.

I didn’t want other families to feel the way I felt—isolated, unsure, and unsupported.

When families come to our events like Autism Fest or connect with our community, I want them to feel:

  • Empowered

  • Motivated

  • Supported

  • Seen

I want them to walk away knowing, “I’m not doing this alone.”

A Message to Caregivers: If you are struggling right now… if you feel alone…

Please hear me:

You are not alone.

Do not box yourself in. Do not close yourself off from the possibility of connection.

Stay open—to community, to relationships, to support.

Your village is out there. And sometimes, it starts with just one connection.

Closing Reflection: Building a village doesn’t happen overnight—but it does happen.

And when it does, everything begins to shift.

You feel lighter. You feel stronger. You feel supported.

Our Promise. At The Suggs Foundation, we are committed to being a part of that village for every family we reach.

We represent:

  • Support

  • Community

  • Motivation

  • Growth

And over time, our goal is simple:

To make sure no family ever feels like they have to walk this journey alone.

Call to Action: If you’re looking for a community that understands, supports, and uplifts—you belong here.

We invite you to join our growing village by connecting with us and becoming part of our support network.

You can also join our Spectrum Guardian Facebook Group, a safe space created for caregivers to share, learn, and support one another through every stage of the journey.

Together, we are building a community where every family feels seen, supported, and never alone.
